FAQs

What is involved?

The expedition will depart from Alice Springs, deep in the heart of central Australia and cross through all ten Australian Deserts. Traversing 4 states and over 6500km of desert track and sand dunes, riding deep into the most isolated and unexplored parts of Australia.

How long will the expedition take?

With an expedition of this size, it would be foolish to not expect a hold up along the way somewhere, but the whole trip should take no longer than 25-30 days to complete.

Will I need my own bike?

It is recommended that you ride your own bike that you are familiar with and can take spares and are able to do minor repair and maintenance. Hwever, having said that there will be a mechanic as part of the expedition so if we do run into any major issues, we should have the tools and technology to get you back in the saddle.

The only modification needed will be a range of up to 350 km. if you cant ride this range, you will be provided fuel bladders that you will need to carry so you can refuel yourself when required.

What modifications will I need to make to my bike?

It all depends on your riding ability. Some of  the desert we will be crossing will have large sand dunes and twisting sandy tracks. Picking up a big bike in these conditions can get exhausting for the best riders. So a smaller CC bike is recommended.

I have a big touring type bike, will this be suitable?

A moderate level of fitness is recommended as wwe will be riding up to 200km or more per day so over an extended period, fatigue will start to become a factor. However, having said that our sweep riders and myself are there to help get you through the more challenging sections and make sure we all get through it together. We will also have an abundance of healthy food to replenish lost energy stores at the end of each day.

What kind of fitness level will I need?

Sand riding is challenging at the best of times. So it is recommended you have an understanding of the challenges it presents. With the safety of all or riders at the top of our priority list, there will be opportunity to partake in training rides prior to our departure from Alice. And I can assure you, if your sand skills aren’t the best when we begin, they will certainly have improved once we finish.

How much off road riding experience will I need?

This expedition will be the first of its kind. Noone has every put something of this magnitude together before, and so this will be the pioneers journey. You will be part of a very unique group of people who have come together because they share a passion for adventure and the wild places. With the aim of making this expedition an annual event, you will forever be remembered as being one of the first.

What is different about this trip that is so different to other touring groups?

During eh days, temperatures can expect to range from low twenties through some of the southern deserts, to low 30s once we cross over into the tropics. During the night, it can get quite cold in the desert with frost settling over the land. It is recommended to bring a warm sleeping bag as well as a good jacket to sleep in.

Will it be cold/hot? What will the weather be like?

Each rider will be allocated a large gear bag as part of their riders kit. You will only be able to take this bag as storage room in the support vehicle will be limited. You can also take a backpack or other gear, but this will have to be strapped to your person or bike.

How much gear can I bring?

We will be filming and taking photos of the whole expedition, so it is recommendd that you don’t bring heavy and bulky camera gear. If you do insist on taking it however, it will need to be stored and make up part of the kit in your gear bag.

Can I bring my own drone/ camera gear?

So long as we know about them prior to ordering supplies and stores, this shouldn’t be an issue. We will however be in some extremely remote areas at times, so variety of food may become an issue.

I have certain dietary concerns, will this be an issue?

We will have trained medical staff as part of the support crew, as well as a dedicated medial bike to patrol the rider train. If in the event you injure yourself, we will have space in the support vehicles to drive you out, or if in the event of a more severe accident, we will rendezvous with the RFD at the closest air field for air evac.

What will happen if I injure myself?
